We all have moments of stress, and often during these moments we reach for sugary or salty snacks to comfort us. These foods do not help with stress and can even make it worse.
Sweet potatoes are a great stress-reducing snack, in part because they help satisfy your urge to eat carbohydrates and sugary snacks. Sweet potatoes will deliver lots of nutrients that your body can process slowly and steadily.
Folic acid in asparagus has actually been proven to enhance your mood, making it a perfect snack to keep on hand for tense situations.
Vitamin C reduces stress and helps return blood pressure and cortisol to normal levels after you’ve dealt with a stressful situation.
Avocados contain glutathione, which blocks intestinal absorption of fats that cause oxidative damage. These stress blockers also contain lutein, beta-carotene, vitamin E, and more folate than any other fruit.
Famed for their antioxidant content, berries contain compounds that may help prevent the premature ageing often seen with chronic stress.
They also temper the release of sugars into the bloodstream after eating.
This makes raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries the best sweet choice if you feel you just have to have that dessert or sweet snack.
Unlike other sweeter fruits, they cause little fermentation and gas in the bowel and, as chronic stress impairs digestion, this is helpful if you’re under pressure.
